I have fond memories of this activity as a kid. We would often do it at church or on road trips in the car. Now all of our RadRoadTrip readers can have the fun of recreating this activity for your own kids.

Our downloadable worksheet has a box with four sections. Each section of the box will be space for part of a body to be drawn by the participants. The first person will draw a head and shoulders in the top box. Then fold your drawing backward along the “Fold Here” line so that it is not seen by anyone else. Pass the paper to the next person who will draw the chest and upper arms. Fold that section over and pass the paper to the next person who will then draw the waist, hands, and upper legs. Fold that section over and hand to the last person who will draw the lower legs and feet. Unfold the paper and check out your creation. It is helpful to put notch lines on the top of each following section so that the person knows where to connect their body parts to yours.

One of the favorite puzzles my kids like to do on road trips is to solve logic puzzles. They have become such a demand, that we have created a tool that allows you to create logic puzzles of your own. Right now we support 4×4 sized puzzles.

Simply enter a title and description for your puzzle. Then list the entities (labels such as Car, Color, Shirt, Music, Name, Birth Month, etc) for your puzzle. Put the entity values in for each entity (eg. for Color: Blue, Black, Yellow, Orange). Then type in your clues as well as text for your solution.

The tool will automatically generate the puzzle for you, including a solution that is blacked out on the screen.

If you like creating logic grid puzzles, then give this little tool a try for your next road trip.

I haven’t seen these types of puzzles since I was a kid, but the other day my daughter was trying to do one that she has found in an old magazine. The nostalgia came rushing back to me and I decided to build an online creator for these types of puzzles.

There is really nothing to these puzzles. You just take a word of your choice and have it enlarged vertically and shrunk horizontally so that it is hard to see what the word is from casual sight. Kids have to study the stretched/squeeze word to determine the word.

This type of puzzle is going to be more popular for your younger kids, but we have given you the ability to stretch the word to varying degrees to make it harder for older kids as well.

Click the button below to launch the Word Squeeze puzzle creator.

The Message Grid Puzzle is our latest big family travel tip!

We only discovered these types of puzzles for kids a few months ago, but already the younger children have loved doing these more simple puzzles. We call these puzzles, our Message Grid Puzzles. You can quickly and easily generate a puzzle for your kids and print them off for your next family road trip.

This is how they work. You type in a short message (if your message is too long it will flow off of the page when printed). Once your message is typed in, you click the “Generate” button. This will create a grid with each row in the grid labeled with a letter of the alphabet. Throughout the grid there will be an X in various cells. Also, at the bottom of the grid there will be blank spaces that show the number of letters in each word.

Once you have printed your free word puzzle, your child will start at the left column. They will go from the top to the bottom of that column. When they encounter a cell with an X in it, they will look at the left end of the grid to see what letter that X belongs to. They then write that letter in the first available blank message space at the bottom of the puzzle. The once a column has been completed, they move right one more column and repeat.

Once they have discovered the letters for each X position, they will have revealed your message.

Click the button below to launch your own Message Grid generator utility.

You many have never heard of a Letter Boundary Word Puzzle. We recently got an idea for this puzzle off of a twitter post by @PennyDellPuzzle.

This puzzle will probably be more ideal for older kids, teenagers, and adults who like word puzzles.

The object of the puzzle is to provide a letter at the beginning of the word as well as a letter at the end of the word. You also specify the number of letters in the word.

The player must try to come up with as many words as they can that fit the size of word that starts with the given letter and ends with the specified letter.

For example, one puzzle may be to find as many 4 letter words that you can think of that starts with a “B” and ends with a “D”.

Our tool will help you generate the puzzle and the solution.

We are excited to bring Crossword Puzzle Maker utility into our road trip activities website. Our kinds enjoy doing puzzles on our road trips. Crosswords are always a favorite!

The goal is to fill the white squares with letters, forming words or phrases, by solving clues which lead to the answers. The answer words and phrases are placed in the grid from left to right and from top to bottom.

Squares in which answers begin are numbered. The clues are then referred to by these numbers and a direction, for example, “5-Across” or “14-Down”.

We have a number of young children that are the preschool and early grade school age. If my young ones take after me, they are going to have issues with handwriting.

In order to keep the younger kids engaged on our road trips, we have started creating handwriting practice sheets for them to work on during part of the trip.

Before now we had to either buy educational workbooks or download a special handwriting font and background and create documents to print them out. This got tedious and didn’t work across computers.

In order to make it easier to generate our own handwriting pages, we have created an online handwriting worksheet generator utility. You can now create your own handwriting worksheets and print them out for your kids.

Once you have your grid set up the way you like it, you add a “Path Phrase”. This path phrase is given to the player.

The player follows the words of the path phrase and marks them off in the puzzle. The pass phrase starts at the top-most, left character in the grid. The player then follows the correct letters by moving right, left, up, down, or diagonally. You are to use no letter more than once. After you have found all of the letters in the path phrase, you take the remaining letters and go from left to right and top to bottom and fill them into the blank message spots at the bottom of the puzzle to reveal a hidden message.

The earlier we can begin to teach children to make good choices in their lives, the better for them and for us as parents. Even the youngest children can begin to understand how to evaluate choices and consequences.

On your next trip take advantage of the captive audience by having a learning experience in the form of an activity. This activity can help get children thinking about natural consequences to choices that they could face in their lives.

“What would happen if … ?” is played by taking turns having one of the travelers suggest a possible choice or course of action and then having them choose another passenger in the car (or the whole family) discuss the probable outcome of the choice.

Here are some sample situations that could be given as a starter:

—What would happen if John consistently ran into the road without looking both ways?
—What would happen if Aylee decided that she didn’t want to go to college?
—What would happen if Alayna made up her mind never to smoke a cigarette?
—What would happen if Aliece decided to try to smile at everyone for one day?
—What would happen if Jace went to stay with Grandma & Grandpa for a week instead of staying home and playing video games?
—What would happen if Avary decided to take piano lessons instead of violin lessons?

Some of the situations could have obvious positive or negative consequences. Others may not have positive vs. negative, they could just have different consequences.

Allowing children to come up with as much of the consequence as they can provides an effective learning experience. You should try to avoid making this a time for lectures or preaching, but rather be a game that helps kids evaluate situations independently.
