Little Compton, RI

comptonLittle Compton has been known in the past as Fogland. Despite the name, however, Little Compton is hardly ever foggy. Little Compton is a picturesque little town surrounded by lots of greenery and open views. This small town has a culture that defines current reasoning to keep up with the changing world. They are happy to stay with their old customs and enjoy the historic culture of the city. In fact, many of the residents argue against the constant demand to grow by sticking with the motto of “keep Little Compton little”. Although the town may be protective about preserving their culture and their history, they are still inviting unwelcome visitors.

The nearby Sakonnet Harbor provides cool salty sea breezes through its nearby shore. It serves as a beautiful contrast to the green farms and is highlighted by beautiful colonial style cottages.

Although the does not change much in the past hundred years, the town houses a Museum, the Wilbor house museum provides items and history dating back to the 1600s. This Museum was originally built as a home by Samuel Wilbor, but is now the home of the Little Compton historical Society.

Although the population of this town is less than 4000 people, it is dotted by about 57 historic cemeteries scattered out throughout the town.

Besides the few 17th-century structures in the town that are still standing, there are many more buildings that date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. You can tour by a Quaker meeting house, number eight schoolhouse, the town hall, Wilbur’s store, and the United Congregational Church which all were built before the 1900s.

While the majority of your trip to Little Compton will be sightseeing, farmland, and bird wildlife, there are a few shops for those hoping to purchase trinkets or memorabilia of the town. The majority of the shops are hosted in the town, and which is the city’s main historical Center.
