Fictionary

dictThis is a fun game that, although it requires some equipment, can keep the whole car entertained for quite some time. The object of the game is to write down definitions of unknown or complicated words that will trick the other players in the vehicle. You, as a player, will try to figure out what the correct definitions are to each word.

You need at least three participants for this game. It is also very helpful to have a large dictionary, a writing utensil for each person, and paper or note cards that can be used for each round.

During each round there is a Chooser. You can rotate the role of chooser between each round or keep the same chooser for a given number of rounds. The Chooser pics their word from the dictionary and pronounces it to the entire vehicle. People may ask the Chooser to spell the word for everyone. The chooser must do this as requested.

If the word has a possibility of more than one definition, the chooser needs to pick one of those definitions — it is usually best to choose the first definition because most dictionaries will include the most popular definition first.

Once a participant has listened to the word and understands how it is spelled, they write a possible definition down on their piece of paper. When they are done, they put their initials on it and give it to the chooser. The chooser, during this process, will write the correct definition on his piece of paper. It is important for the chooser to read each paper as it was given to him to make sure that he can first, read the writing, and second understand what is written there. If you cannot understand it, he can speak privately with the person that wrote it to clarify what their definition is. This must happen so that when the chooser reads back their definition it can sound natural and as good as if he wrote it himself.

Once he receives all of the submissions, he mixes them up and reads them out loud to everyone. The chooser may be asked to read the definitions again — or even a specific definition. The chooser should comply.

When it is time to vote, each player, except for the chooser, votes for the definition that they think is correct. In some variations of the game players cannot vote for their own definition — however, do what works best for your family or the occupants of your vehicle at the time.

After the round is over, we tally up the scores. Players earn one point if they voted for the correct definition. They can also receive one point for every vote that their definition received from the other players. The chooser earns a point if no one selects the correct definition.

You continue to play with as many rounds as is enjoyable to everyone.
